Free SEO checker (on-page basics)
We'll check the on-page basics that help search engines understand one page: the title, meta description, canonical link and robots settings, and whether we can find a sitemap. It isn't a full SEO audit, so there are no rankings, backlinks or content scores.
What this checks
- Page title
- Meta description
- Canonical link
- Robots settings
- Sitemap (usual address or listed in robots.txt)
This is a passive, light-touch check. It only reads what a normal browser visit and public DNS can see. It isn't a security test, a penetration test or a guarantee.
Check a site
Checking your site… This usually takes under a minute.
What your result means
Page title
- Pass: Your page has a clear title of a sensible length.
- Worth a look: Your title is very short or very long. Roughly 30 to 60 characters is a sensible guide.
- Needs fixing: Your page has no title, so search engines will make one up.
- How to fix: Write a title that says what you do and where, for example "Plumber in Ealing | Example Plumbing Ltd".
Meta description
- Pass: Your page has a description of a sensible length.
- Worth a look: Your description is missing, very short or very long. Roughly 70 to 160 characters is a sensible guide. Google sometimes writes its own anyway.
- How to fix: Add one or two plain sentences that sum up the page and give people a reason to click.
Canonical link
- Pass: Your page tells search engines which address is the main one.
- Worth a look: There's no canonical link, or it points to a different address from the one we checked.
- Needs fixing: Your canonical link points to another website or to a page that doesn't work.
- How to fix: Add a canonical link that points to this page's own https:// address.
Robots settings
- Pass: Search engines are allowed to show this page.
- Worth a look: (none)
- Needs fixing: This page, or your robots.txt file, tells search engines not to show your site. If you meant to do that, you can ignore this result.
- How to fix: Remove "noindex" from the page, and remove "Disallow: /" from robots.txt, unless you want the site hidden.
Sitemap
- Pass: We found a sitemap, which helps search engines find all your pages.
- Worth a look: We couldn't find a sitemap at the usual address or listed in robots.txt.
- How to fix: Most website builders can make one for you. Then add its address to robots.txt and to Google Search Console.
FAQs
Is this a full SEO audit?
No. It checks the on-page basics of one page only, not rankings, search volumes, backlinks or content quality.
Why can a missing description still be only Worth a look?
Search engines often write their own snippet. A clear description still helps you guide what people see.
What does noindex mean?
A signal that asks search engines not to show that page in results. Use it on purpose (for example on thank-you pages), not by accident on your home page.
Do you check my whole site for SEO?
No. Only the page you enter, plus a quick look for a sitemap.
